NEW 40z BREAKS ICE IN BOSTON

Boston - Jan. 26, 2009 - "Chunks of ice and snow on the foredeck fly off at 35 knots!" laughed MJM Yachts principal, Bob Johnstone, summing up sea trials for the company's new 40z on Boston Harbor in January. This 40-foot, high-tech, IPS-powered, Down East design, combines seven desirable attributes of a modern power yacht: timeless styling; speed; fuel efficiency; ease-of-handling; quiet operation; seaworthiness and comfort. Three boats were sold during the trials in spite of the ice and snow. Of course, the reverse-cycle air conditioner kept the pilothouse nice and warm. The next 40z available is hull #7, which will be completed August 1, 2009.

The 40z will make its world premier at two locations on the same weekend - the Miami International Boat Show (Feb. 12-16) and the New England Boat Show in Boston (Feb. 14-22).

This new Doug Zurn design is purpose-built to use half the fuel of similar length boats... with a projected 1.5 nmpg (17 gph) at 25 knots. That's the same fuel consumption as a much smaller twin outboard center console 29-footer. Top speed during trials with a pair of Volvo D6 370 diesels was 39.2 knots with full tanks and 10 technicians aboard. The boat is quiet enough to hear a whisper at 25 knots (75 dbA) and dry - not a splash of water on the stern seat when carving turns at 30 knots.

Boating Picture Book for children

Little Harbor Publishing announces it's book: "My First Picture Book of Boating Words" by Nicholas Agro. My First Picture Book of Boating Words is a unique boating book for young children. Each page contains vibrant color photos of boating items along with the name of each item below it. Some of the photos in this 24 page book include: powerboat, sailboat, dinghy, life jacket, lighthouse, seagull, marina, harbor, anchor etc. It covers powerboats and sailboats as well as fishing and other water related items. The book was created by a boater and is designed for both boaters and non boaters who enjoy the beauty of the water. It is currently available for purchase from popular online retailers including BarnesandNoble.com, Target.com and amazon.com, and can be ordered by all retail bookstores.

The author, Nicholas Agro is an avid boater who has been boating for 17 years. He enjoys both powerboating and sailing on the waters around Long Island, NY. The idea for the book came while he was reading picture books to his young son. He looked for a picture book of boating words but could not find one. So he decided to create his own. In the process, he also created Little Harbor Publishing. In the future, Little Harbor Publishing will publish more books of interest to boaters.

Many of the words featured in the book are specific to boating such as helm, fender, boathook, port, starboard, bow, stern, mast, boom etc. The focus of the book is on teaching children a true boating vocabulary. It worked with the author's son. "Before he could speak, my son knew the words in this book and could point to the correct pictures when asked. And when he first started speaking, he already had a boating vocabulary!"

Additional information is available on their website www.littleharborpublishing.com.

Umbrellas for Opening Ports … Why Didn't Someone Think of That Sooner?

Something to keep drizzle out of my opening portholes … what a great idea! A way to air out the head … What took so long? These are common reactions to the PortVisor™, which is designed to increase the usability and comfort of boats.

PortVisors™ fit on the outside of the cabin side to cover the top of the port, using included adhesive tape. No drilling or cutting is required and installation takes only minutes. With PortVisors™ installed, ports can be left open during rainy weather so cabins are more comfortable.

They are made from clear UV-resistant bronze Lexan. PortVisors™ are designed with great attention to a sailor's need for comfort, safety, reliability, and convenience. So the visors are strong and will not snag lines or ankles; they only protrude about 2.75" from the cabin. PortVisors™ do not block the view from inside the cabin, just the UV and the rain. The visors also add an attractive appearance, especially for older boats.

Installing PortVisors™ is an easy and practical, yet distinctive and affordable, way to add value to your boat. PortVisors™ are custom designed to maximize protection for specific portlight sizes. They come in several models to fit many common opening portholes. Models are about $26 each. The PortVisors™ are made for Seaworthy Goods by a manufacturing operation in Florida with more than 25 years experience in the plastics industry. Seaworthy Goods produces smart products to increase the comfort, safety, and enjoyment of time afloat. Smart Stuff. Smart Boats. Find Crew, Find Boats, Find Crewbay

Thanks to www.crewbay.com, sailing in the Caribbean and other exotic, far-flung locations on both motor boats and sailing boats can now become a reality, regardless of age or experience. The brainchild of two young graduates Lucy Avent and Oliver Wells, the site is a must for anyone looking to and for crew.

Lucy explains 'When we became interested in boating, we weren't even sure if there were opportunities on boats for amateurs like us who wanted to spend time on the water and learn to sail. We now know only too well that the opportunities are out there, the only thing lacking was a single, easy-access site that brought crews and boats together to share the adventure of sailing as we did. We began crewing with little experience, but after only a couple of passages and a few hundred sea miles under our belts, just a week's intensive training with the Southern Sailing School on the Hamble River, UK, enabled us to complete our RYA Day Skipper qualification. These skills enabled us to tackle our first long-haul delivery from Gouvia, Corfu to Ipswich, UK on a 57ft Swan and we haven't looked back since!'

This love of sailing and all things nautical inspired Lucy and Oliver to embark on the promotion of boating to as many people as possible. 'We are keen to encourage other like-minded potential sailors to realise their dreams and spend time on the water. Often people are deterred by the cost, but sailing doesn't have to be expensive - many of the vessels on Crewbay require little or no contribution from crew, and there are many paid positions for people with more experience. It is a great way to earn sea miles in preparation for an RYA qualification and meet some interesting sea-faring folk! Our aim has been to create a place where skippers and boat owners can find crew wherever they are in the world. Similarly, people who want to crew or try their hand at boating can find vessels to suit them.'

If you would like to sail, visit www.crewbay.com where you can browse through the extensive database of sailing and power boats that require amateur or professional crew, or even just sailing companions, all over the world.

For those wishing to find crew or even just folks to share expenses, simply add your boat to the database free of charge. This will give you access to the Crew Message Board where you can select crew from their personal profiles and portraits.

Since its launch on 1st August 2005, the Crewbay service has proved very popular with a growing database of worldwide registered crew and boats. 'Our first registered boat was in Belize. We couldn't decipher how on earth they had heard about Crewbay, but that is the great thing about the internet. You can reach people all over the world.'

Crewbay is the ideal place to find boats needing crew in your area. There are numerous opportunities for day and weekend sailing in the UK as well as transatlantic crossings on boats flocking to warmer climes to escape the European winter. If you want to join them, simply log onto www.crewbay.com.
